As the Bears and I were tumbling into a tropical depression on Sunday, I was able to finish reading the enjoyable novel, The Same Stuff as Stars. Written by Katherine Paterson in 2002, the story is a wonderful read. Paterson's writing style as exampled in her books, Bridge to Terabithia and the Great Gilly Hopkins, is simple but yet powerful and descriptive.
The main charactewr, Angel Morgan is a 13 year old thrust into adulthood. Angel's father is in jail, her mom is an alcoholic and has abandoned Angel and her younger brother, Bernie at their great-grandmother's crumbling farmhouse. Great Grandma is poor and aged, and needs assistance. Angel receives assistance from the town librarian and a mysterious stranger who appears at nighttime to teach Angel about the stars and astronomy. Angel does the grocery shopping, enrolls her brother and herself in school, where soon the word gets out about Angel's dad. Angel is confronted with a number of issues but remains strong, and positive seeking to carve out a new life.
The story is believable, and touching. Angel feels betrayed by grown-ups, always letting her down. She places faith in the adults and they leave. Paterson's books have many messages, one is of hope. Pick up the book and enjoy!
