When you subscribe to the blog, please post an intitial blurb about yourself. Perhaps you can tell us about your life as a student, a teacher, or a reader. Or maybe you could describe the last YA book you remember reading or one you are currently reading. I am in the middle of _Looking for Alaska_ by John Green. It won the Michael L. Printz Award for excellence in YA Lit. The Michael Printz Award books are written for older adolescents (high school aged) so they are often more complex in narrative structure and theme. They often also have more "adult" content, for good or bad. I'm liking this book so far. It's about a male protagonist who goes away to a boarding school, meets new friends, and starts doing things like drinking, smoking, and having sex. However, there are hints about something bad that happens during a late night prank--but I'm not sure yet what this is. Perhaps this doesn't sound like the most unique of plotlines, but the characters are interesting (not at all flat), and the tone the author takes is one of cynical humor (sort of Holden Caulfield-like). I'll let you know how it ends, if you're interested. Alaska, by the way, is a girl's name--she's beautiful, "moody," subversive, and not exactly trustworthy. Interestingly complex for a teenage girl protagonist!
I'll go now--post away! Thanks for a great first class last night.
Janet
